Col 10x8" photo Born March 16th 1932 in Iowa. Before he became an astronaut in 1964 he was a naval pilot. In 1968 he flew aboard the first manned Apollo flight, Apollo 7. During this mission the crew performed several tests on the spacecraft in preparation for its future destination the moon.
